Some builds come through the shop that immediately stop us in our tracks. This RAM AEV Prospector XL paired with an AT Overland Aterra camper is one of those rigs. The Prospector XL is already one of the most capable factory-built trucks you can buy, and when you pair it with a lightweight, modular flatbed camper like the Aterra, the result is a powerhouse that’s equal parts off-road monster and backcountry basecamp.
Straight from AEV, the Prospector XL arrives ready for serious terrain. Equipped with a heavy-duty AEV front bumper, AEV light cannons, a WARN 16.5 winch, and 8100 Bilstein shocks, this truck doesn’t need much in the way of upgrades to be expedition-ready. With a long bed and plenty of payload capacity, it’s also the perfect platform for the Aterra.
The Aterra is AT Overland’s crown jewel for full-size trucks, combining composite construction, a lightweight footprint, and a smartly designed interior. For this build, we installed the Aterra and outfitted it with a thoughtful mix of upgrades designed for comfort and function on extended trips.
Inside the camper, you’ll find:
A nearly king-sized pull-out bed (6.5 ft by 6’2”)
HEXA cabinet system paired with Step 22 gear bags for modular storage
National Luna 50L dual zone fridge/freezer
Truma VarioHeat furnace for efficient heating
Full LED interior lighting with dimmable white/yellow options
Arctic Tern fan for ventilation on warmer days
This build isn’t just about comfort — it’s built to stay off-grid. We integrated a Dakota Lithium 135Ah battery paired with a RedArc Alpha 50 DC-DC charger, allowing the system to charge from both solar and the truck’s alternator. That means reliable power for the fridge, lights, and outlets no matter where the trip takes you.
We also kept the water system simple and reliable: a 12-gallon fresh tank paired with a rechargeable Dometic GO faucet. It’s easy to winterize, easy to refill, and gives plenty of capacity for extended weekends away.
On the outside, functionality was key. We mounted a GP Factor propane mount with quick-connects for the Truma heat system, installed a Rig’d UltraSwing for spare tire and table space, and added Maxtrax recovery boards for when the road gets a little too rough.
This Prospector XL with an AT Aterra camper shows exactly why we love working with AT Overland. The foundation is strong, the camper is versatile, and the outfitting we added ensures it’s ready to roll for years of backcountry travel. Best of all, there’s still plenty of room for the owner to continue dialing it in as they go.
