WILD WEDNESDAY: Outfitting a Dog Trainer's RAM 2500 for Adventure and Work - Juniper Overland

The RAM 2500 is one of the most reliable heavy-duty trucks for outdoor enthusiasts and professionals alike. In this build, we were tasked with creating a versatile, comfortable, and functional space for a customer who works as a dog trainer. Transporting dogs safely while maintaining ideal conditions was the top priority. Here’s how we combined premium products and thoughtful design to achieve this perfect setup.

Strength and Comfort Combined

We started by installing the AT Overland Truck Cap, which is renowned for its durability and insulation. Unlike traditional fiberglass options, the Truck Cap is made from aluminum, providing a perfect balance of exceptional strength with reduced weight—a crucial feature for heavy use in a working vehicle. Durability is key when choosing a topper, as this component must withstand the rigors of both on-road and off-road adventures. The aluminum frame ensures that the topper can take a beating, whether from branches when exploring narrow trails or from the everyday use of loading gear in and out.

What truly sets the Truck Cap apart is its honeycomb composite insulation. This material not only makes the topper strong but also helps regulate temperature, which is critical when transporting dogs in varying climates. The honeycomb insulation keeps the interior cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, making it the perfect solution for a working dog trainer who wants to ensure their canine companions are always comfortable.

The topper was also outfitted with a MaxxAir 4401M Fan, which is known for its reliable airflow and durability. The MaxxAir fan features 10-speed settings, allowing precise control over ventilation. It can even run in the rain thanks to its integrated rain cover. Proper ventilation is essential for ensuring the safety of the dogs, especially during the warmer months when temperatures inside the vehicle can quickly rise.

In addition to the fan, we installed Tern Overland Euro Windows on either side of the topper. These windows provide excellent cross-ventilation while also allowing natural light to flood the space, making it a more inviting environment for the dogs. The Euro Windows are equipped with built-in screens and blackout shades, offering versatility depending on the conditions. The screens keep insects out during the summer, while the blackout shades provide privacy and help regulate the temperature inside.

Retrofitting for Enhanced Insulation: Tern Overland Side Hatches

The customer later returned to upgrade the Tern Euro Windows to Tern Overland Side Hatches. This modification was aimed at improving insulation even further. The side hatches offer a tighter seal compared to standard windows, reducing drafts and keeping the interior at a more stable temperature. This is particularly important when transporting dogs, as even slight temperature fluctuations can cause discomfort or stress. Additionally, the side hatches provide easier access to gear stored in the bed, making the topper even more versatile for work and recreation.

The decision to go with Tern Overland products comes down to quality and reliability. Tern Overland is known for producing high-quality components designed specifically for off-road and overland applications. Their products are built to withstand the harshest environments while providing comfort and functionality. We trust Tern Overland because their products consistently meet our standards for durability and performance—two qualities that are non-negotiable for our customers.

A Powerful 12V Electrical System

To maintain a safe temperature inside the topper during hot days and to power other essential accessories, we installed a robust 12V power system. This setup included components from Redarc, DCS (Deep Cycle Systems), and Noco, all of which are leaders in their respective fields.

Redarc BCDC1250D: Efficient Power Management

At the heart of the electrical system is the Redarc BCDC1250D charger. This 50-amp, dual-input DC-DC charger is designed in Australia to optimize power from the vehicle’s alternator, ensuring fast and efficient battery charging even when running multiple accessories. One of the standout features of the BCDC1250D is its MPPT solar regulator, which allows the system to integrate solar panels for additional charging capabilities. This is ideal for dog trainers who may spend long days outdoors without running the engine, as it ensures that the batteries remain charged and ready to power the cooling systems.

Redarc is an industry leader when it comes to vehicle power management solutions. Their products are designed to withstand extreme temperatures, vibrations, and dust, making them perfect for overlanding and off-grid applications. We recommend Redarc products because they’re built to last, and their superior warranty support gives our customers peace of mind that their investment is protected.

DCS 200Ah Slimline Lithium Batteries: Lightweight and High Capacity

To store power, we installed two DCS 200Ah Slimline Lithium Batteries. Lithium batteries are ideal for this application due to their lightweight construction, high capacity, and deep-discharge capabilities. Each battery weighs significantly less than a comparable AGM battery, which helps keep the overall weight of the vehicle down—an important factor when considering payload and handling.

Lithium batteries also offer a much longer lifespan compared to traditional lead-acid batteries. With up to 5000 charge cycles, these batteries provide reliable power for years to come. The slimline design allows for flexible installation options, maximizing the available space in the truck bed. For a dog trainer who needs to power a cooling system, lights, and other accessories, the combination of capacity and durability makes DCS batteries the perfect choice.

Noco Genius Pro and Exterior Shore Power Plug

To provide additional charging options, we installed a Noco Genius Pro charger along with an exterior plug for shore power. This setup allows the customer to easily charge the batteries when parked at home or at a campsite with electrical hookups. The Noco Genius Pro is a versatile charger that can handle various battery types, including lithium, making it a great addition to the system.

Having shore power capability adds a layer of flexibility, ensuring that the customer always has a way to recharge the batteries, regardless of where they are. This is particularly useful for a working dog trainer who may need to keep the cooling system running overnight or during extended stops.

Reliable Cooling on the Go

To maintain a safe temperature inside the topper during the hottest days, we replaced the MaxxAir Fan with a Dometic RTX 2000 12V air conditioner. This unit is a game-changer when it comes to off-grid cooling. With 2000 watts of cooling capacity, the RTX 2000 provides powerful and efficient cooling, ensuring that the dogs remain comfortable even in extreme heat.

One of the key features of the Dometic RTX 2000 is its variable speed compressor, which allows it to operate efficiently and reduce power consumption. It also has an eco mode, which further optimizes energy use by automatically adjusting the cooling output based on the interior temperature. This is crucial for maximizing battery life, especially when running off-grid for extended periods.

The RTX 2000 also features a fan-only mode, which provides ventilation without the need for full cooling. This is perfect for days when the weather is mild, and only a gentle airflow is needed to keep the dogs comfortable. The decision to install the Dometic RTX 2000 came down to its combination of performance, energy efficiency, and reliability. Dometic is a trusted name in the overland and RV industry, and their products are known for their rugged construction and ability to perform in demanding environments.

Why This Build Stands Out

This RAM 2500 build combines premium products designed for function, comfort, and reliability. Each product was carefully selected based on the unique needs of the customer—balancing durability with essential features for a working dog trainer. The AT Overland Truck Cap provides the perfect blend of strength and insulation, ensuring that the dogs are comfortable in all conditions. The Redarc BCDC1250D and DCS Lithium Batteries provide a reliable power source, while the Dometic RTX 2000 air conditioner ensures that the temperature inside the topper is always safe for the dogs.

This setup is ideal for anyone who needs to transport animals or sensitive cargo in varying climates. The combination of lightweight, high-capacity lithium batteries, efficient power management, and a powerful cooling system makes this build a standout example of what’s possible when you combine the right products with thoughtful design.
